The main concept is the restoration and redevelopment of a modern ruin, left behind from the era of commercial prosperity of the city. It is located in the centre of the city, more specifically on the seafront of Volos. It is a long, low and massive volume which in the past was occupied by small shops. Nowadays it is in very poor condition and as a result the biggest part of the building is abandoned.

So, in an attempt to reactivate the building, we propose its conversion into a multi-use cultural center, open to the residents of the city. As it is considered an important example and vestige of its period, we maintain the facade unchanged and we redesign the interior.  Our proposal is consisted of two closed spaces, facing an interior garden. Of the two spaces, one will be used as a cafeteria and the other will be designed to host exhibitions, presentations etc. There is also activation of the roof deck, which offers more space with open and unobstructed views to the sea. Regarding the materials, we combine the existing with new and we experiment on the textures and variations. The idea is that the building will act as a connection, a bridge between the noisy urban environment and the calm waterfront. The intention is to create a hybrid outdoor space which will be open throughout the day, hosting various events and welcoming public uses.
